So, I’ve decided a new page is in order to contain project two in all its minute glory.

Appropriation. Reappropriation. I just made up a new word and you can’t do a fkn thing about it!

For project two, in order to accomplish the goal of appropriation, I first decided to do simple photoshops of websites to offer my own smarmy commentary. The word simple is misleading here, for me it’s not simple. My flash/photoshop skills are below average at best, and I don’t like asking for help. I do it when I need to, but I don’t like it. That being said, it takes me a long time to accomplish anything in those programs, and ones like them. I seem to have taken more kindly to the scholarship aspect of the DMS program.

I digress. First I went the route of simple mockery, unHarmony

We’ve all seen that before on my main page. I have other pages of fun mockery, I’ll get around to uploading them at some point. But the meat of the project came with the idea of a flash app that would allow people to add their own commentary. Something basic would suffice. And since I don’t know flash very well, and know AS2.0 even less, well then this would be an interesting endeavor. I spent the weekend trying to tweak a flash app a friend had written, and of course it didn’t really work…so the idea then turned to appropriating a flash app…to then appropriate the website. Here’s the first stab.

And since I can’t figure out how the hell to embed flash in here (if its even possible) just go take a look at the file Here. It needs work, I know, we’re getting there. Plus I want to be able to display a few iterations of the project.

For a second version of the project, I was able to expand the drawable area, and make it so that you could draw all the way around without any borders. I also added a black box to put the drawing tools in relief, so they’d be more easily visible. The actionscript regarding the brush sizes isn’t working…I have no idea why, but as it stands, this is the final concept of the drawing tool, allowing people to do their own graffiti.

So for the final piece of the puzzle, user created, go Here and tag the page as much as you like. Once you’re set, take a screen cap of your graffiti (apple+shift+4 on mac) or on windows just hit your print screen button. Beyond that I can’t help you, google it for crying out loud! Once you’ve got your image, upload it in the comment section!

Happy Cinco de Mayo.

PS.

Oh, and a third try that gets a little better, I think even the brush sizes are working:  http://www.mediamax.com/guster4321/Hosted/HillaryDraw.swf
